Tiran Island lies in the Strait of Tiran at the mouth of the Gulf of Aqaba, between the Sinai Peninsula and Saudi Arabia. Long administered by Egypt, sovereignty was formally transferred back to Saudi Arabia in 2017. The island's fringing reefs, part of the wider Straits of Tiran dive area, are still reached by boat from Sharm el-Sheikh.
