The Hanging Church (Church of the Virgin Mary) in Old Cairo, Egypt, is built atop the southern gate towers of the Roman-era Babylon Fortress, constructed around 300 CE under Emperor Diocletian, with its nave suspended over the passage between them. Dated to as early as the 3rd–4th century CE, it is one of Cairo's oldest Coptic Christian churches.
The Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus, known as Abu Serga, is a basilica-plan church in Old Cairo dating from around the 5th century, among the oldest churches in Egypt. Tradition holds that the Holy Family sheltered in a crypt beneath it during their flight into Egypt; the building features twelve marble columns and a 13th-century carved iconostasis.
The Ben Ezra Synagogue in Old Cairo's Fustat district has documented origins predating 882 CE, with the present building rebuilt in stages over the following centuries. It is best known as the site of the Cairo Geniza, a storeroom that preserved roughly 400,000 medieval Jewish manuscript fragments, rediscovered by scholars including Solomon Schechter in the 1890s.
Khan el-Khalili is a historic bazaar in Islamic Cairo, Egypt, founded in 1382 CE by Emir Jaharkas al-Khalili under the Mamluk Sultan Barquq as a caravanserai for trading merchants. Still a working market today, its narrow lanes sell gold, spices, textiles, and souvenirs, and it sits adjacent to the al-Hussein Mosque and the historic al-Azhar area.
El Fishawy Cafe is a historic coffeehouse in Cairo's Khan el-Khalili bazaar, founded in the late 18th century (commonly dated to 1773) and still run by descendants of its first owner. Open around the clock with no entrance fee, it became a favored haunt of Nobel Prize-winning novelist Naguib Mahfouz and is noted for its ornate mirrors and mashrabiya woodwork.
