Sharm El Sheikh Entry Requirements 2026: Do You Need a Visa?

Sharm El Sheikh Entry Requirements 2026: Do You Need a Visa?
Short answer first: if your trip stays entirely within Sharm El Sheikh and nearby South Sinai, most nationalities enter completely free, no visa purchase required. Here's exactly when that applies, when it doesn't, and what changes the answer.

When the answer is "no, you don't need to pay for anything"

A stay of up to 14 days within South Sinai specifically — Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba, or Taba — qualifies most nationalities for a free entry stamp, issued automatically at passport control. No advance application, no fee. Sharm El Sheikh and Taba airports moved away from the old paper arrival card in early 2026, so exactly what the immigration officer asks for can vary slightly by arrival point — just follow their instructions.

When the answer flips to "yes, you need a visa"

The free stamp is geographically limited, and this is where people get caught out. It does not extend to Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, or anywhere across the Suez Canal on mainland Egypt — and, less obviously, it doesn't cover Ras Mohammed National Park either, despite being a short boat trip from the Sharm marina. A Cairo day trip from Sharm, a flight to Luxor, or a Ras Mohammed excursion all require the full e-Visa or visa on arrival, not the free stamp.

If you do need the full visa: your two options

The e-Visa, applied for in advance through the official visa2egypt.gov.eg portal, gets approved before you fly — no airport counter involved. The visa on arrival is paid in cash at the airport bank desk before passport control. Both currently cost the same for single entry.

What it costs, as of 2026

Fees rose twice this year: the visa on arrival went from $25 to $30 on 1 March 2026, and the e-Visa followed on 27 April 2026, to $30 single entry and $65 for the six-month multiple-entry option. Pay only through visa2egypt.gov.eg — unofficial copies of the portal exist and overcharge for the identical visa.

New in 2026: a digital alternative (Cairo only, so far)

Cairo International Airport started piloting a QR-code version of the visa on arrival on 1 August 2026, replacing the paper sticker with a code scanned at passport control, obtainable via kiosk, portal, app, or agency up to 48 hours ahead. It costs $36 total. As of now this hasn't reached Sharm El Sheikh Airport — expect the traditional process here until that changes.

Quick-reference FAQ

I'm only going to Sharm and Dahab — do I need anything? No, the free Sinai stamp covers both, up to 14 days.
I want to add a Cairo day trip — does that change things? Yes — any mainland Egypt trip, even a single day, requires the full e-Visa or visa on arrival for your whole stay.
Is Ras Mohammed inside the free zone? No — it's treated as outside South Sinai's free-stamp area, so it needs a full visa too.
Which costs less, e-Visa or visa on arrival? Currently the same price for single entry — the real difference is convenience, not cost.
If your plan stays Sinai-only, a Dahab Blue Hole day trip is a straightforward add-on that doesn't change your entry requirement at all. If you're getting the full visa regardless, pairing it with Cairo or Luxor turns an unavoidable fee into the gateway for a much bigger trip.
